Who it is for

For people who work for several clients at once.

fractionalflow is the work journal for fractional executives and consultants: the CFO, CMO, COO, CTO or CRO with three, four or five engagements in the same week.

Each client has a retainer or a rate, a budget of hours and an update they expect. The record of who got what is usually your memory on a Friday afternoon. fractionalflow keeps that record as you work.

  • Hours per client, without timers

Your screen becomes a timeline. Each block lands on the client it was for, against that engagement's budget.

  • Fix a block with one key

1 to 8 moves a block to a client, X flips billable, 0 marks it as not client work. What you set by hand beats every rule.

  • A brief before the meeting

Where you left off with a client: the last session, what is open and what comes next.

Summary
  • Background reading for the forecast assumptions.
  • Marked non-billable: it counts as client time but is not invoiced.

What it takes off your Friday

The timesheet and the update, done before you sit down to do them.

Bill accurately.

The timesheet is built from what you did, so it matches how you bill. Paste it into the invoice, or export it.

  • RoundingSix-minute or quarter-hour, set per engagement. Back-to-back work for one client rounds up once, not once per line.
  • Billable or notBillable and non-billable time are kept apart, per block.
  • ExportCSV or Markdown, per client and period.

The Friday update, already drafted.

Pick a client and a week. fractionalflow writes the update from that client's blocks: what moved, what you did, where things stand. You read it, edit it and send it.

  • Client-facingWritten in your voice to the client, outcomes first. No hours, no timestamps.
  • Other clients maskedTheir names, domains and keywords are replaced before the prompt leaves your Mac, and again on the answer.

Privacy

Your clients' work stays yours.

You work inside other companies' confidential material. Here is where it is kept, and what leaves your Mac.

  1. 01

    Stored on your Mac

Recordings and your timeline are stored locally on your Mac, not on our servers.

  2. 02

    Your choice of AI provider

Screen observations and prompts go to the provider you pick: Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. With a local model, the analysis runs on your Mac.

  3. 03

    Clients kept apart

A client update is drafted from that client's blocks only, with your other clients' names masked. A block that overlaps two clients appears on a timesheet as “Shared block”, with its time and no description.

Also leaving your Mac: anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off in Settings, and any support message you choose to send.

Questions

What people ask first.

Is fractionalflow a time tracker?

It does the job of one without the timers. Your Mac records your screen while you work, and fractionalflow turns that into a timeline of blocks, each assigned to a client.

At the end of the week you have hours per client, a timesheet and a drafted update. We call it a work journal because it records what you did, not only how long it took.

How is it different from Harvest or Toggl?

Harvest and Toggl are built around timers and entries you fill in, and they do things fractionalflow does not: invoicing, team reports, integrations.

fractionalflow starts from the other end. It records the work as it happens and builds the entries for you, per client, with a summary of each block. You export the timesheet as CSV or Markdown and take it wherever you invoice.

What leaves my Mac?

Recordings and your timeline are stored on your Mac. Four things can leave it.

Screen observations, block text and prompts go to the AI provider you pick while you record; with a local model that analysis runs on your Mac. When you draft a client update, that client’s activity goes to the same provider with other clients’ names masked. Anonymous usage statistics are sent unless you turn them off in Settings. A support message goes to us if you send one.

The privacy page has the full list.

Can one client’s work show up in another client’s update?

The draft is built to prevent it. An update is written only from the blocks allocated to that client. Before the prompt leaves your Mac, every other client’s name, domain and keyword is replaced with “[another client]”, and the same pass runs on the answer.

A block that overlaps two clients counts as time but is not described. No filter catches everything, so read the draft before you send it.

Can I pause recording?

Yes. Pause from the menu bar for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or until you resume. You can also list apps that are never recorded.

Will it slow my Mac?

Recording is light. The heavier work is the analysis. With a cloud provider it happens off your Mac. With a local model it uses your Mac’s GPU and battery, so plug in for long sessions.

What platforms does it run on?

fractionalflow is a native Mac app and needs macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. There is no Windows, iPhone or web version.
